Work Upgraded

Business automation · Senior ownership

Scale Operations, Not Manual Work.

We identify the core workflows worth automating, build the business case, and lead the change through implementation and adoption.

From fragmented manual work (email and documents, spreadsheets, core systems, vendors and teams) through the five SCALE stages owned by Work Upgraded, to measurable operating results: less manual work, more capacity, measured adoption.

When to bring us in

When Automation Becomes a Business Problem

Growth is outrunning operational capacity

Transaction volume is increasing, but the business cannot keep adding people, handoffs and overhead at the same rate.

Margin pressure exposes the cost of manual work

Leadership needs structural productivity gains, not another round of discretionary cost cutting.

Core workflows are becoming a bottleneck to service or growth

High-volume work is too slow, fragmented or dependent on individual know-how.

Automation is becoming a competitive issue, but nobody senior owns it

Competitors are finding faster and more efficient ways to operate while automation ideas inside the business remain fragmented. Leadership lacks a clear view of what matters, what the ROI is, and who should drive it.

What we provide

Senior Ownership for Business Automation

Most automation initiatives cross operations, technology, finance, vendors, and frontline teams. Work Upgraded provides one senior owner who decides what is worth automating, redesigns the process, leads implementation, and makes sure the change is adopted and delivers the intended operating result.

Internal teams and specialist vendors handle the technical build. Work Upgraded keeps the initiative connected to the business outcome. Not an automation agency. Not a tool consultant.

Free entry offer

Workflow Review

One workflow. One business case. One clear next decision.

After a short fit conversation, we review one core operational workflow and provide a short Workflow Review Brief.

Start with a Workflow Review
  • The main operating drag
  • Likely automation or process leverage
  • Rough impact and implementation effort
  • Whether a 3–6 month payback appears plausible
  • A pursue / investigate further / stop recommendation

Engagements

Three Ways to Engage

Different ways to engage, not a mandatory sequence. Clients enter at the point that matches the problem they already understand.

How we work

The SCALE Framework

A structured path from operational problem to measurable change.

The SCALE Framework: from operational problem (manual disconnected work, siloed systems, delays and rework, unclear ownership) through Study, Choose, Architect, Launch and Embed, to measurable change (less manual work, better throughput and capacity, higher adoption and sustained performance).

Client perspective

What leaders say

We had three automation projects running, but nobody really owned them. Nick took the mandate, stopped one, combined the other two, and six months later the claims team was handling a third more volume with the same headcount.

CEO, Insurance Broker

The Decision Sprint showed us what not to do. That alone was worth more than the project we nearly started. The business case was clear enough for our CFO to approve it without a second meeting.

Managing Director, Freight Forwarder

Nick worked with our existing vendor rather than replacing them, and stayed involved until the new process became the way the team actually worked. That’s the part every previous consultant had skipped.

Head of Operations, Wholesale Distributor

FAQ

Questions leaders ask first

What does a Fractional Automation Executive actually own?

We own the automation mandate across business case, process design, solution direction and implementation. Internal teams and specialist vendors may execute parts of the work, but we remain responsible for connecting the pieces and driving the initiative toward the business outcome.

Do you implement the automation?

We lead the implementation, but we are not a development or automation agency. We work with your internal teams, existing vendors, or help bring in the right specialists when needed. FAE owns the initiative, coordinates delivery, and keeps implementation tied to the business outcome through rollout and adoption.

Do you only work with AI?

No. AI is one option. Depending on the problem, the right solution may involve workflow automation, integrations, existing software, custom software, process redesign, or a combination of these.

Where should we start if we have many automation ideas?

If you want to start small, begin with a free Workflow Review around one core workflow. If the broader question is which opportunities deserve investment, the Decision Sprint is designed to map the selected operating area, compare the strongest candidates, quantify the business case, and decide what is worth pursuing first.

Does business automation mean one large transformation project?

Usually not. We typically start with focused initiatives that may involve roughly 20–100 hours of specialist implementation work and target a 3–6 month payback. The goal is to prove value on the right workflows, then build from there. These are working qualification benchmarks, not implementation quotes or guarantees.

Can you take over an automation initiative that is already underway?

Yes. A common situation is an initiative that has stalled between leadership, operations, technology, and vendors, or has been technically delivered without producing the expected operational change.

Do we need our own technical team or vendor?

Not necessarily. We can work with existing internal teams and vendors, or help identify suitable implementation specialists where needed. Work Upgraded remains the senior owner rather than becoming the technical implementation agency.

Ready to Scale Operations, Not Manual Work?

If you have a core workflow that is too manual, an automation initiative that needs stronger ownership, or a set of opportunities with no clear priority, let's discuss it.
